Which path will you take?

This week’s focus is on navigating career transitions.  Most physcians I know have considered a major career change at least once in their careers. Few know how to approach a major career change and most make the same mistake: they make a change out of desperation and leap before they think.

In this week's blog post, I share my experience of recognizing burnout and successfully transitioning to a more fulfilling career path. By the end of the post, you will discover the signs that it might be time for a change, explore various career options outside traditional clinical roles, and learn how to create a strategic transition plan that aligns with your passions and strengths.

Coach's Corner

This week's exercise is designed to help you assess your current career. It doesn't matter if you are considering a change-or happy where you are- taking stock of where you are is a great way to prevent burnout and dissatisfaction from creeping in.

Career Fulfillment Assessment

Step 1: Identify Your Passions

  • Imagine your ideal work day. (If your ideal "work day" involves retirement- that's OK. Run with that.) What would you be doing?
    • List three activities or subjects that ignite your passion during your ideal day.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Current Role

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your current job satisfaction. How closely does it align with your ideal day?
    • What aspects of your current role bring you the most joy?
    • What aspects drain you?
    • How many of your "ideal activites" are part of your current work day?

Step 3: Explore New Opportunities

  • Based on your passions, brainstorm your ideal career. Refer back to this week's blog and previous posts about different clinical career paths and nonclinical jobs for physicians for inspiration.
  • Research what skills or qualifications you might need to pursue these roles.

Step 4: Set a Goal

Define one actionable step you can take this month to move towards a more fulfilling career path (e.g., schedule a meeting with a mentor, enroll in a relevant course, etc.).

Reflection: How do these insights align with your long-term professional and personal goals? Write down your thoughts and consider booking a free coaching consult to discuss them.

The Holiday Lists That Burn Doctors Out
You've heard the song lyrics. "He knows when you are sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good so be good for goodness sake."  Every holiday season comes with lists. The naughty list. The nice list. The grocery list.  And for physicians? The most exhausting one of all: the should list. I should pick up the extra shift. I should host the office party I should ke...
The Unexpected Gift Inside Your Side Gig
Lately I’ve been living in two completely different professional worlds. One is the world of building our comprehensive heart center. I have been in my division director roles for 5 months. The heart center work started years ago. Years of planning, committees, approvals, budgets, and meets. I believe in ths work with my entire being. It is the right direction for our patients and our progra...
The Holiday Paradox: Why Slowing Down Is the Fastest Way to Take Control
It has been a long holiday weekend. We were buried under ten inches of snow, I’m 20 hours away from finishing a seven-day stretch of call that included the holiday, and somehow I still managed to get Thanksgiving dinner on the table. The kind of stretch where your brain feels like it has too many tabs open and your body is running on fumes. When I finally stepped outside to let the dogs out,...
