Which path will you take?

This week’s focus is on navigating career transitions.  Most physcians I know have considered a major career change at least once in their careers. Few know how to approach a major career change and most make the same mistake: they make a change out of desperation and leap before they think.

In this week's blog post, I share my experience of recognizing burnout and successfully transitioning to a more fulfilling career path. By the end of the post, you will discover the signs that it might be time for a change, explore various career options outside traditional clinical roles, and learn how to create a strategic transition plan that aligns with your passions and strengths.

Coach's Corner

This week's exercise is designed to help you assess your current career. It doesn't matter if you are considering a change-or happy where you are- taking stock of where you are is a great way to prevent burnout and dissatisfaction from creeping in.

Career Fulfillment Assessment

Step 1: Identify Your Passions

  • Imagine your ideal work day. (If your ideal "work day" involves retirement- that's OK. Run with that.) What would you be doing?
    • List three activities or subjects that ignite your passion during your ideal day.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Current Role

  • On a scale of 1 to 10, rate your current job satisfaction. How closely does it align with your ideal day?
    • What aspects of your current role bring you the most joy?
    • What aspects drain you?
    • How many of your "ideal activites" are part of your current work day?

Step 3: Explore New Opportunities

  • Based on your passions, brainstorm your ideal career. Refer back to this week's blog and previous posts about different clinical career paths and nonclinical jobs for physicians for inspiration.
  • Research what skills or qualifications you might need to pursue these roles.

Step 4: Set a Goal

Define one actionable step you can take this month to move towards a more fulfilling career path (e.g., schedule a meeting with a mentor, enroll in a relevant course, etc.).

Reflection: How do these insights align with your long-term professional and personal goals? Write down your thoughts and consider booking a free coaching consult to discuss them.

More Than a Feeling: The Neuroscience of Gratitude and How It Transforms the Way We See the World
When I first started exploring gratitude, I wasn’t looking for inspiration, I was looking for evidence. Like many physicians, I was tired, skeptical, and searching for something that actually worked. Gratitude, I thought, sounded nice in theory, but how could it possibly make a difference when you’re running on fumes? Then I found the science. Neuroscientists have shown that gratitude isn’t ...
The Surprising Science Behind Fear
Why Fear Might Be Your Best Compass   It Starts Early Plug in a night light if you’re scared of the dark. Run away. Cover your eyes during the scary part of the movie. If you admit to fear, you’re called a chicken or a scaredy-cat. As children, we’re taught to ignore fear, to push it away, and never admit to  it. There are some valid lessons in those lessons. The the growling dog chasing your ...
The Last Rose of Fall: Why Your Quieter Season Might Be Exactly What You Need
I almost missed it. On a walk through the yard, I noticed several deep red blooms on our climbing rose alongside a few new buds. It’s a robust grower, reliable all summer. I celebrate the first bloom of spring, but as the months roll on, I stop noticing them as much. That deep red bloom in mid-October, set against the turning leaves, made me stop. Even in the gradual slowdown of fall, there is...
