Redesigning Your Career Without Quitting Medicine

Most people who reach out to me about coaching start with something like:

“I love being a doctor. I like the patients. I enjoy the clinical problem-solving. But… I can’t keep practicing like this.”

They’re burned out, but not broken.

They’re bored, but not disinterested.

They want to keep practicing medicine… just not in the way they’re doing it now.

I’ve noticed that this is a bit different from what other coaches report. Others primarily see clients who are done with medicine. I think my experience is different because it mirrors my own story.

I seriously considered leaving, but ultimately, I didn’t want to stop being a doctor. I just couldn’t keep being one in a system that stifled my creativity, values, and wellbeing.

So instead of quitting, I rebuilt.

This week’s blog is about how you can, too. I’m sharing seven unconventional ways to reclaim your autonomy and create a medical career that works for you—not against you.

Coach's Corner

Take 5–10 minutes this week and journal your answers to the following:

  • What do I love most about practicing medicine?
  • Where do I feel most alive in my day?
  • What parts of my current practice drain me the most? Why?
  • If nothing were off the table, what would my ideal practice look like?

This simple exercise can help you spot patterns and possibilities you may be missing. Sometimes, the first step isn’t changing everything. It’s noticing what matters.

We review their Medical Student Performance Evaluation, also known as the Dean's Letter. I highlight all the positive comments about them and discuss their achievements over the past four years. Medical students are truly amazing. We have student...

When Winning Isn’t the Point (But You Win Anyway)
This week, Katie Ledecky,  the most decorated female swimmer in history,  did the “impossible.” At 28, she won the 800-meter freestyle at the World Championships, outperforming 18-year-old phenom Summer McIntosh. This was her seventh world title in the event, and she’s the only woman to win the same individual race at four consecutive Olympics.   Most people don't pay attention to swimming o...
