If you've stopped in the middle of your workday, and wondered "Is this all there is?" then this newsletter is for you. (If you haven't had this experience, enjoy the cute picture of Coop.)

In an article I contributed to KevinMD, I share a personal moment that many of us have experienced but few discuss openly: that stop in the middle of the sidewalk moment when you are not sure how you lost your way but can't imagine taking a different path.

The good news? You don't have to make an all-or-nothing choice.

There's a vast middle ground where fulfillment and a clinical career coexist. Use the button below to read the article and discover how to redesign your life without leaving your clinical training behind.

Find A New Path

Coach's Corner

Take 10 minutes with pen and paper to answer these questions honestly:

  1. What still lights you up? Think about your last good day at the office. What made it fun? (Patient interactions? Teaching? Problem-solving?)
  2. What drains your energy?  Be specific. Is it the EMR? Administrative burdens? The pace? Identify the true energy vampires and imagine a path without them. What does that path look like?
  3. What skills do you love to use? Intentionally using natural strengths is a quick path to fulfillment. What are yours? (Communication? Analysis? Leadership? Creativity?)
  4. If you had permission to experiment, what would you try first? Teaching? Writing? Consulting? Leadership? Name one small step you can take that leads towards a career that pays you to do what you love.

This isn't just journaling—it's the first step in Career Evolution. The path forward begins with clarity about what matters to you.

Ready to Find Your Middle Path?

If you're like the community of physicians I work with, you know that staying miserable isn't sustainable, and leaving medicine entirely either feels wrong or unrealistic without a plan.

You don't have to figure this out alone.  Let's redesign your career without abandoning your skills or draining your retirement account.

Your next step:  Book a free 45-minute Career Evolution Strategy Session. We'll identify your biggest obstacles and map out your first steps toward a sustainable physician life that energizes rather than depletes you.

Olympic Dreams
If you’ve been reading my blog or this newsletter for a while, you know I have an Olympic obsession. I was a competitive swimmer from age six until I was twenty-two. Somewhere along the way, like most kids who spend that much time staring at a black line on the bottom of a pool, I dreamt of Olympic glory. It wasn’t a realistic dream. But isn't that the point? That’s what the Olympics do. ...
A New Chapter: Conversations, Tools, and Support
As we turned the page from 2025 to 2026, I’ve spent some time reflecting on where The Developing Doctor is headed. One word kept coming up for me: connection. At its heart, this platform has always been about creating a place where physicians can share real stories, learn from one another, and find practical resources to support both their careers and their lives. With that vision in mind,...
Holding hope close as we wrap 2025
This past year felt, in many ways, like stepping into what feels like the new normal of medicine:  reimbursement pressure tightening, patient complexity growing, workforce shortages felt daily, and technology surprising us by showing up where we least expected it. And yet, even in that heaviness, something quietly remarkable emerged: possibility, agency, and the chance to shape careers that ...
