Choosing A New Career Path

When I started medical school, I envisioned having a practice like my family doctor's. A small, private clinic with a stable office staff where I knew all my patients and had control over the practice. But as I progressed through my training, my interests shifted and  I realized that healthcare was changing. In this edition of Mastery and Wellness: Thriving in Medicine, we'll explore different practice models and discuss how you can regain control over your career.

As of January 2024, 77.6% of all physicians in the United States are employees. Less than half own their practices.

My latest blog post, "Clinical Careers," examines the challenges and opportunities physicians face in their professional journeys. I discuss the different models of clinical practice and the importance of self-reflection, continuous learning, and adaptability when choosing a practice model.

By embracing a growth mindset, choosing wisely, and developing the skills needed to thrive in your environment, you can create a fulfilling and impactful medical career, even if it looks different from what you initially envisioned.

"Opportunities don't happen. You create them."

— Chris Grosser

This powerful quote reminds us that we are the architects of our own success. As physicians, we have the unique ability to shape our careers and make a meaningful difference in the lives of our patients. By  seeking out the opportunities that fit what you want, learning, and collaboration, you can unlock your full potential and thrive both personally and professionally, even if your career path takes unexpected turns.

Coach's Corner

Take a moment to reflect on your current job and career trajectory.
Are you feeling fulfilled and challenged?
Do you find yourself yearning for something different?

Consider the following questions:
  • What aspects of your current position bring you the most satisfaction?
  • Are there areas where you feel stagnant or unfulfilled?
  • What changes could you make to your current situation to improve your well-being and professional growth?
  • Is it time to explore new opportunities that align with your values and goals, even if they differ from your initial vision?

By honestly assessing your current situation and identifying areas for improvement, you can make informed decisions about your career path.

Take control of your career!

Remember, investing in your mastery and wellness is essential for long-term success and satisfaction in medicine, regardless of how your career unfolds.

No one loses summer all at once
I love this time of year. Living in a college town, there's a hum of excitement as students return. On Friday I helped cloak the M1s at the white coat ceremony put their white coats on them. They start medical school on Monday. The garden is mature and cranking out cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini faster than we can eat them. The tomatoes, unfortunately, did not do well this year, so it looks l...
The question no one asked you in July
Every July, the same question is uttered around the hospital: how are the new residents, fellows, and faculty settling in? It can be heard in hallways, in division meetings, on calls with referring physicians. It is a good question. I ask it myself, constantly, about everyone whose year just started. A month into the academic year, have you checked in on yourself? How are you settling in? This ...
She has started over more than once
The sentence comes up in some form in almost every coaching conversation I have. "I'm too far in to change now." Sometimes it's a senior resident. More often it's someone twelve or fifteen years into a career. They are very good at what they do, and they feel stuck on a treadmill with no stop button. The length of the training. The weight of the debt. A lifestyle built on a specific salary. ...
