Do you feel like you're constantly juggling your personal life and dedication to your patients? No matter how you prioritize your personal and professional obligations, you feel like you're letting someone down.

Guilt is a powerful emotion.

In medical training, we're programmed to put our patients first, but sometimes life has other plans. In my latest blog post, I share a time when I chose family over work and the guilt that came with it. But fear not! I also share some practical tips on how to get to the root of this guilt and find a balance that works for you.

Our values guide our actions, and as doctors, we have a strong set of professional values that can clash with our personal ones. Ready to dive deeper into this topic and learn how to prioritize what truly matters to you? Click the button below to read the blog!

"Values are like fingerprints. Nobody's are the same, but you leave 'em all over everything you do."

-  Elvis  Presley

Coach's Corner

This week, the focus is aligning your workday with your core values.

Do you think that sounds "squishy"? A Mayo Clinic study found that physicians who spent just 20% of their time doing something they valued reported higher job satisfaction.

The 3-3-3 Strength Spotting Challenge

1. Review and Complete the Core Values Assessment:
Take 5 minutes at the start of your day to identify your top 5 values using this values assessment. Choose 1-2 values to focus on each day.

2. During your day:
As you go about your day, pause briefly before each patient interaction, meeting, or key decision point. Take a deep breath and mentally reconnect with the values you chose in the morning. Ask yourself, "How can I embody those values in the upcoming situation?"

3. Midday Reflection:
Pay attention to how this intentional value's focus impacts your presence, decision-making, and interactions. Notice any shifts in how you feel or in the responses you get from others.

3. End of The Day ( 5 minutes):

At the end of your workday, take 5 minutes to reflect.

  1. How did your focus on values influence your day?
  2. What successes or challenges did you have in aligning your actions with your values?
  3. What insights or intentions would you like to carry forward?

Repeat this exercise once or twice a week. As you build your "values muscle," you'll operate with greater integrity, authenticity, and purpose. Like those unique fingerprints, your core values will shine through in all you do.

The Barriers We Build (and why it is time to take them down)
I had two very different experiences this week that got me thinking about something we all struggle with but rarely name: the invisible barriers we construct in our own lives. Experience 1: The Resource Allocation Meeting I sat through yet another meeting about resource allocation. We desperately need nurses and coordinators to support our clinical mission, but we’re stuck in an endless loop of...

Does the world feel like it’s shifting beneath your feet lately? As physicians, we’re no strangers to uncertainty. We’ve stood at the bedside weighing imperfect options, guided by training and instinct when protocols fall short.
