I interviewed for a leadership postion this week. It was a position I had not considered when I started my career. As I have grown and changed, I've come to think about leadership differently. This week's newsletter and blog explore what it means to be a physician leader.

Embracing Your Role

In this week's blog post, I explore why leadership isn't optional for physicians— and why it can be so challenging. We are taught be be decision makers. When I first started practincing, I confused decisiveness with leadership. They are not the same thing.

Many of us shy away from the "L-word," thinking leadership belongs to those with formal titles or corner offices. But here's the reality: every day, patients, families, and healthcare teams look to you for direction, clarity, and decision-making. That's leadership in action, whether you've consciously accepted the role or not.

The most powerful shift happens when we move from simply solving problems (something we're all trained to do expertly) to framing problems.

When you define the challenge, establish the context, and set the parameters for solutions, you're exercising leadership at its highest level.

Remember: medical school taught you to solve problems, but physician leadership is about determining which issues deserve your attention and how they should be approached.

This kind of mindset shift doesn't just make you a better doctor—it transforms your experience of practicing medicine.

The Barriers We Build (and why it is time to take them down)
I had two very different experiences this week that got me thinking about something we all struggle with but rarely name: the invisible barriers we construct in our own lives. Experience 1: The Resource Allocation Meeting I sat through yet another meeting about resource allocation. We desperately need nurses and coordinators to support our clinical mission, but we’re stuck in an endless loop of...
