Have you ever wondered what would happen if you couldn't practice medicine tomorrow? In this week's blog post, I share my journey through burnout and the financial wake-up call that followed. Like many of us, I had a "secure" medical career and a solid retirement plan, but burnout exposed the cracks in my financial foundation. Read "Financial Security for Burnt Out Physicians" to discover why diversifying your income isn't just smart—it's essential for your well-being.

Coach's Corner

The purpose of this exercise isn't to generate a financial plan. Rather, it is to reconsider how you think about your financial security. Financial security isn't greed. It is self-preservation. A solid financial plan is part of well-being, satisfaction, and a joyful life.

Grab a notebook and pen (and maybe your spouse or a family member for outside input) and ponder the following questions:

  1. What’s my “burnout buffer”? What would happen if I needed to step away from clinical practice for 6 months? How many months could I cover expenses if I reduced clinical hours?
  2. What’s one skill or passion (teaching, tech, writing) that could become a side income stream? Try to come up with 3 potential income streams that leverage your expertise and passions.
  3. Who’s on my financial team? Do I have advisors who understand physician-specific challenges?

Jot down one small step you’ll take this week—even contacting a financial advisor counts!

When Winning Isn’t the Point (But You Win Anyway)
This week, Katie Ledecky,  the most decorated female swimmer in history,  did the “impossible.” At 28, she won the 800-meter freestyle at the World Championships, outperforming 18-year-old phenom Summer McIntosh. This was her seventh world title in the event, and she’s the only woman to win the same individual race at four consecutive Olympics.   Most people don't pay attention to swimming o...
