Does the world feel like it’s shifting beneath your feet lately?

As physicians, we’re no strangers to uncertainty. We’ve stood at the bedside weighing imperfect options, guided by training and instinct when protocols fall short.

But here’s the paradox: the same skills that help us thrive in clinical ambiguity

  • Hypervigilance
  • Meticulous planning
  • Relentless problem-solving

…can backfire when life itself feels unstable.

The Noise Beyond the Hospital Walls

Headlines, climate debates, and endless “what-ifs” aren’t just background noise. They amplify stress, fueling:

  • Catastrophic thinking
  • A sense that something is about to go wrong
  • Hasty or rigid decision-making
  •

Reframing the Unknown

This isn’t about positive thinking or “letting go.” It’s about rebuilding our relationship with uncertainty.

When we stop conflating:

  • “I can’t control this” with
  • “I can’t handle this”

…we create space to show up with clarity for our patients, families, and ourselves.

Uncertainty is the only certainty there is.

The “Containment” Practice":

  1. Grab a pen and divide a page into two columns: What I Influence | What I Don’t.

2. List 3-5 items in each column related to a current stressor (e.g., a policy change at work, global events, a career dilemma).

3. Circle one item under What I Influence. Ask: What’s the smallest, most meaningful action I can take here this week?

4. For the What I Don’t column: Write, “I release the need to solve this today.”

This isn’t resignation—it’s strategic energy management.

Bridging the Communication Gap: Why Your Message Isn't Landing (And How to Fix It)
Are We Even Hearing Each Other Anymore?   If it feels like we’re all talking past each other lately, you’re not imagining it. We live in a polarized time, and communication feels next to impossible. In healthcare, the challenge is amplified: high stakes, constant interruptions, and everyone operating at maximum capacity with little margin for listening or giving grace. We were trained to tal...
The Barriers We Build (and why it is time to take them down)
I had two very different experiences this week that got me thinking about something we all struggle with but rarely name: the invisible barriers we construct in our own lives. Experience 1: The Resource Allocation Meeting I sat through yet another meeting about resource allocation. We desperately need nurses and coordinators to support our clinical mission, but we’re stuck in an endless loop of...
Choosing When There's No Perfect Choice: Navigating Career Trade Offs
What big decision is keeping you up at night? You’ve weighed the pros and cons, run the numbers, and talked it through with your people. And still, there’s no obvious “right” answer. As a clinician, you are trained to identify the best path forward for the patient in front of you, to make the correct diagnosis from the exam, to make an evidence-based choice supported by guidelines. Even when...
