Embracing Uncertainty:  How To Anchor Yourself in an Unpredictable World

Does the world feel like it’s shifting beneath your feet lately?

As physicians, we’re no strangers to uncertainty. We’ve stood at the bedside weighing imperfect options, guided by training and instinct when protocols fall short.

But here’s the paradox: the same skills that help us thrive in clinical ambiguity

  • Hypervigilance
  • Meticulous planning
  • Relentless problem-solving

…can backfire when life itself feels unstable.

The Noise Beyond the Hospital Walls

Headlines, climate debates, and endless “what-ifs” aren’t just background noise. They amplify stress, fueling:

  • Catastrophic thinking
  • A sense that something is about to go wrong
  • Hasty or rigid decision-making
  •

Reframing the Unknown

This isn’t about positive thinking or “letting go.” It’s about rebuilding our relationship with uncertainty.

When we stop conflating:

  • “I can’t control this” with
  • “I can’t handle this”

…we create space to show up with clarity for our patients, families, and ourselves.

Uncertainty is the only certainty there is.

The “Containment” Practice":

  1. Grab a pen and divide a page into two columns: What I Influence | What I Don’t.

2. List 3-5 items in each column related to a current stressor (e.g., a policy change at work, global events, a career dilemma).

3. Circle one item under What I Influence. Ask: What’s the smallest, most meaningful action I can take here this week?

4. For the What I Don’t column: Write, “I release the need to solve this today.”

This isn’t resignation—it’s strategic energy management.

Olympic Dreams
If you’ve been reading my blog or this newsletter for a while, you know I have an Olympic obsession. I was a competitive swimmer from age six until I was twenty-two. Somewhere along the way, like most kids who spend that much time staring at a black line on the bottom of a pool, I dreamt of Olympic glory. It wasn’t a realistic dream. But isn't that the point? That’s what the Olympics do. ...
A New Chapter: Conversations, Tools, and Support
As we turned the page from 2025 to 2026, I’ve spent some time reflecting on where The Developing Doctor is headed. One word kept coming up for me: connection. At its heart, this platform has always been about creating a place where physicians can share real stories, learn from one another, and find practical resources to support both their careers and their lives. With that vision in mind,...
Holding hope close as we wrap 2025
This past year felt, in many ways, like stepping into what feels like the new normal of medicine:  reimbursement pressure tightening, patient complexity growing, workforce shortages felt daily, and technology surprising us by showing up where we least expected it. And yet, even in that heaviness, something quietly remarkable emerged: possibility, agency, and the chance to shape careers that ...
