Coaching and Therapy: Understanding The Difference

As physicians, we’re trained to fix problems—but when it comes to our own struggles (career dissatisfaction, burnout, or uncertainty about your path), we default to toughing it out and feeling guilty for wanting something different.

Sound familiar?

This week’s blog post tackles a question I hear a lot: “Should I seek coaching, therapy, or both?”  Whether you’re wrestling with mindset blocks, craving clarity, or healing from emotional exhaustion, understanding these two powerful tools can unlock the growth you’ve been craving.

Choosing between coaching and therapy might seem like a matter of preference, like choosing between ice cream flavors, it is more like choosing between a hammer and screw driver. They exist in the same tool box, but have different purposes.

Coaching isn’t therapy, and therapy isn’t coaching—but together, they form a safety net for your well-being.

Coaching focuses on actionable steps to build the future you want, while therapy delves into healing past wounds that impact the present.

I am a big believer in both as vital for physicians ready to reclaim joy in their careers.

“You can’t heal what you don’t acknowledge… and you can’t build what you don’t envision.”

— Adapted from Dr. Nicole LePera

This speaks to the heart of this week’s blog: Coaching helps you envision and build your future, while therapy creates space to acknowledge and heal. Both are acts of courage.

Coach's Corner

1. Grab a pen and paper. Divide the page into two columns:

  • Column 1: “What needs HEALING?” (e.g., lingering resentment from a toxic workplace, anxiety about debt)
  • Column 2: “What needs BUILDING?” (e.g., confidence to launch a side hustle, systems for better work-life balance)

2. Star one item in each column that feels most urgent. Ask:
*“Which column holds the biggest barrier to my goals right now?”*

This simple map reveals where to focus first, and whether coaching, therapy, or both could accelerate your progress.

The Barriers We Build (and why it is time to take them down)
I had two very different experiences this week that got me thinking about something we all struggle with but rarely name: the invisible barriers we construct in our own lives. Experience 1: The Resource Allocation Meeting I sat through yet another meeting about resource allocation. We desperately need nurses and coordinators to support our clinical mission, but we’re stuck in an endless loop of...
