Happy New Year!

Have you ever set a resolution only to watch it fizzle out by mid-January?

You’re not alone!  92 % of New Year's resolutions are never realized!

In this week's blog post, I explore the LEGACY Method a physician-specific approach that aligns your goals with your core values, embraces small wins, and fosters whole-person development.

Imagine setting and achieving resolutions that boost your career and enhance your personal well-being—sounds like a legacy worth building, right?

The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Values
Take a few minutes to jot down what matters most to you—both professionally and personally. Consider questions like:
  • What do I want to be remembered for in my career?
  • What personal achievements bring me the most joy?
Step 2: Identify Small Wins

Using the LEGACY Method, break down your big goals into tiny, actionable steps. For example:

  • Goal:  Improve patient
  • Micro-Action: Take one deep breath before entering each patient’s room.
Step 3: Set a SMART Goal

Transform a vague aspiration into a Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound objective.
Instead of: “I’ll reduce stress.”
Try: “I will practice 5 minutes of mindfulness three mornings per week for the next month."

Laugh a Little: Remember, even Rome wasn’t built in a day—and neither are your resolutions!

Celebrate those tiny victories along the way.

No one loses summer all at once
I love this time of year. Living in a college town, there's a hum of excitement as students return. On Friday I helped cloak the M1s at the white coat ceremony put their white coats on them. They start medical school on Monday. The garden is mature and cranking out cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini faster than we can eat them. The tomatoes, unfortunately, did not do well this year, so it looks l...
The question no one asked you in July
Every July, the same question is uttered around the hospital: how are the new residents, fellows, and faculty settling in? It can be heard in hallways, in division meetings, on calls with referring physicians. It is a good question. I ask it myself, constantly, about everyone whose year just started. A month into the academic year, have you checked in on yourself? How are you settling in? This ...
She has started over more than once
The sentence comes up in some form in almost every coaching conversation I have. "I'm too far in to change now." Sometimes it's a senior resident. More often it's someone twelve or fifteen years into a career. They are very good at what they do, and they feel stuck on a treadmill with no stop button. The length of the training. The weight of the debt. A lifestyle built on a specific salary. ...
