Unveiling New Perspectives on Financial Security

Have you ever found yourself between patients, wondering if all your hard work is truly worth it? I went through a tough patch in my career when I felt completely exhausted and burned out. I kept grappling with two recurring thoughts: "I can't keep doing this," and "If I don't see patients, how will I make a living?" This week's blog post, "Boosting Financial Security Through Skills Development," encourages us to rethink our ideas about wealth and stability.

As doctors, it's often assumed that our salaries bring us financial security. However, this blog takes a different approach, highlighting that true security is about more than just earning a paycheck—it's about using our unique skills to build a sustainable and fulfilling financial future.

Our medical knowledge, problem-solving capabilities, and ability to communicate with empathy are valuable assets that can open up new pathways beyond clinical practice.

The post also discusses the importance of diversifying income streams and exploring opportunities that align with what we love. It's a thought-provoking read that encourages us to see financial security in a whole new light—focusing on personal growth and making the most of our inherent talents.

Coach's Corner

True financial security is about more than dollars and cents. It's about using our resources to live authentically and pursue what truly fulfills us.

In this exercise, take a minute to think about the resources and skills you have that have allowed you to be  successful. How have thos skills contributed to your financial security to date? How can you leverage them in the future to sustain your personal and financial wellbeing?

  1. List Your Skills: Write down all your professional and personal skills—think broadly! Include clinical expertise, leadership abilities, mentoring, research acumen, communication skills, etc.
  2. Identify Transferable Skills: Highlight skills that could be valuable in other contexts. Are you adept at simplifying complex information? That could translate well into writing or teaching.
  3. Explore Opportunities: Consider how these skills can be leveraged. How can they have you work differently in the healthcare system so that you can continue practicing? How mught you leverage in other industries? Could you consult for healthcare startups? Offer telemedicine services? Write a medical blog or book?
  4. Set Actionable Goals: Choose one skill and outline steps to develop it further. Perhaps enroll in a course, attend a workshop, or network with professionals in that field.

By assessing and harnessing your unique abilities, you're positioning yourself to attain and maintain financial security in a way that's both fulfilling and

Out of Office, But Not Out of Touch
Hi friend, I’m sending this from the land of no schedules, no inbox, and definitely no pager. Yes, I’m on vacation, and yes, I’m still thinking about you. This week’s newsletter is short and sweet, because even coaches need rest. And honestly? That’s the point. If taking time off feels “selfish” or “lazy”… that’s not your fault. That’s the conditioning of a profession that often rewards over...
Unlock Better Teamwork with This Communication Framework
As physicians, we’re trained in anatomy, pharmacology, pathology. We also learn how to perform a physical exam and deliver bad news. But we are rarely trained to communicate with our peers. Yet, every part of our job depends on it. Misunderstood messages, unspoken frustrations, and clashing styles disrupt teams, regardless of clinical skills.  In this week’s blog, we explore how the DISC com...
Practicing Medicine is Supposed To Be Hard
How many times have you heard that statement (or something similar)? It makes me chuckle when I hear it because it is usually uttered by a baggy eyed, scrub clad, coffe drinking doctor in the back of a room full of physicians.  Newsflash: every physician knows medicine is challenging. That challenge is one of the reasons we applied to medical school. Physcians embrace challenge.  Here's the thi...
